The Hidden Dangers of CoolSculpting®

The manufacturer claims that CoolSculpting® is a safe and effective procedure for reducing fat but the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has reported that 1 out of every 138 treatments results in Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH)

Consumers undergoing cosmetic procedures expect a certain end result.  A procedure gone awry does not necessarily mean the patient has legal recourse; however, if the person performing the procedure was negligent and breached their duty of care to the patient, they may be liable for any resulting damages.  Patients injured due to negligence during a routine procedure may be entitled to economic, non-economic, and, in some cases, punitive damages.

What is CoolSculpting®?

The non-invasive, selective elimination of adipose tissue through controlled cooling is called cryolipolysis. It employs intense refrigeration to harm and destroy subcutaneous fat cells without hurting the skin in order to reduce the fat content in the area treated.

The treatment consists of a cup-shaped application device which drags a skin roll and subcutaneous adipose tissue between two cooling plates. The typical treatment time is 1 hour, during which the tissue roll temperature falls to around 0 °C.

What is Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia?

Paradoxical Adipose hyperplasia (PAH) is a known side effect of cryolipolysis that was previously not reported.

It occurs when the stimulation (freezing of fat cells) triggers a reactive process in the fatty tissue, which thickens, expands, and breaks up fat cells, allowing the body to process and eliminate them. Specifically, PAH has been observed to develop only following cryolipolysis or treatment with CoolSculpting body sculpting.

What can I do if I have Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia?

Unfortunately, there is very little information available about this rare but very dangerous consequence of CoolSculpting.

If you suspect you have PAH, the World Institute of Family Health (WIFH) suggests that you return to your surgeon for further evaluation.  Patients with PAH can have it treated and removed from their bodies.

Who should avoid this CoolSculpting®?

The procedure is intended to aid in the dissolution of recalcitrant fat cells that are often only reduced by diet and exercise.

It is not considered to be a form of weight loss and should not be used as a treatment for obesity.
